THEME
Post-memory describes the relationship that people have with experiences, stories, memories and events that happened before their own lives, but which have been passed down through family, community, culture or collective history.
We are interested in how these inherited memories can live in the body — and how movement, art and storytelling can transform them.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for approximately:
1 circus artist
1 dance artist
1 physical theatre artist
We are looking for someone who:
• Has a movement-based artistic practice in dance, circus, physical theatre or a related discipline
• Is interested in exploring resilience and post-memory through movement
• Is interested in developing creative work inspired by post-memory and/or have a personal connection to this theme (a direct personal connection is not required, but an interest is)
• Is open to collaboration with our team and the other artists involved
• Is comfortable dancing and creating outdoors
• Is comfortable being filmed and interviewed about your creative process and your relationship to the themes of the project
Speaking Spanish (or Portunhol) , English or French is required to collaborate smoothly. Sincere apologies, unfortunately we don't yet speak Portuguese well. If you would like to speak in Portuguese in the film that is welcomed... we will be able to subtitle the film!
WHAT DOES THE PROJECT ENTAIL?
During the residency/process, you will:
- Create a 2–3 minute solo inspired by resilience and post-memory, either through your own experience or through our project manifesto.
- Your solo will be filmed outdoors/indoors as part of the documentary-artistic project.
- Collaborate with the other selected artists through improvisation and/or short collective creation.
- Participate in conversations/interviews about your creative process and your relationship to the themes.
- Depending on where you are based, you may be invited to film with us in Ericeira, Portugal.
- We will provide studio space for the creation of your solo and cover transportation, accommodation and per diem costs.
- You will receive a flat artist fee of €700.
WHO ARE WE?
We are the Resilience Collective: Juan David, Philippe Jaques and Claire Campbell. Juan David is a cultural mediator and filmmaker originally from Colombia. Philippe Jaques is a dancer, choreographer and director from Ottawa, Canada. Claire Campbell is a dancer, choreographer and movement director from Halifax, Canada.
We have been collaborating on artistic projects around the theme of resilience for the past five years. As friends and artists, we believe deeply in the power of art to affect lives and communities. Our work brings together film, movement and collaboration with artists to explore and highlight this conviction.
Our current project is funded by CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec), and our previous work has also received support from the Canada Council for the Arts (CAC).
We have all recently begun establishing roots and creative connections in Portugal, because we love being here and are excited to meet artists in the local community!
OUR APPROACH
We are a kind, respectful and collaborative team, and we look for the same spirit in the artists we work with.
We are here to have fun, make powerful art, take care of one another and uplift each other.
If this sounds like the kind of environment you want to work in, we would love to hear from you!
